A blog post entitled “Conscious Movement vs. Mindless Exercise” recently reminded of the seismic shift occurring in fitness. Contrasting modalities like barefoot running, Pilates, Zumba, and Crossfit flourish. The elite Equinox gym launched an entire program entitled “Conscious Movement”. My colleagues in movement medicine are reframing what, why, where, and how we exercise.
Although I usually eschew dualistic thinking, it’s fascinating to contrast the old and emerging paradigms:
works through/with injury
values varied intensity
body as ecosystem
prioritizes high intensity
body as machine
endure for results
What other qualities could I list? What form of conscious movement do you practice?
